GRAFTON, Mass. - The Grafton boys basketball team closed out the John F. Kennedy Memorial Gymnasium in style Thursday night, securing a 49-32 victory over Nipmuc to clinch a spot in this year's district tournament.
Point guard Brendan Stock led the team with 15 points, as the Indians turned a 28-20 halftime lead into 17-point victory with terrific defense in the second half. Grafton held the Warriors to just 12 points after the break.
Most of the students attending the game wore white for the final home game, and big signs with the faces of each senior were held up in the stands. It was a memorable win for the last varsity boys basketball game in what will soon be the old Grafton High School.
"This was a big game for a lot of reasons. It was senior night, last game here in this gym before we go over to the new high school, and we were trying to clinch districts," said Grafton coach John Patraitis. "The guys really gave a great effort for four quarters. I'm really proud of them."
Nick Treu scored 11 points and Obi Melifonwu added 10 points as well as several key rebounds on the defensive end.
Stock ran the offense well, hit shots when he needed to and was solid from the free throw line.
"Brendan's been huge for us. I ask him to do a lot out there," said Patraitis. "He handles the ball, he scores for us, rebounds, defends. He's been playing really good basketball, especially towards the end of the season."
The Indians are off until after February vacation. They will not play in the Clark Tournament this year, but the results of the games will affect seeding in the district tournament and opponents are not yet known.
